Story is a event that we tell to someone
or people accordance to direct or indirect. Short story is a kind of story, it
is made interesting to make reader satisfied after they read it. In short story
has intrinsic element and extrinsic element. Intrinsic element is topic,
setting, character and plot, but also still divisible. Setting is very
necessary for story, because it can explains the character what, when and
where. What for they are do in story, when for the time they are doing and
where for the place they are staying or doing.
Ernest Hemingway in album “In Our Time”,
always use Nick or (his family) his father as character in his works. Almost
all of short story in that album tell about Nick, although any some short story
in that album didn’t tell Nick. Perhaps Hemingway want to tell about Nick’s
life. Such as in “Indian Camp”, the characters are Nick when he was child, His
Father, Uncle George, Indian women and Indian men. In this story tells that
Nick, his father (as Doctor) and Uncle George after fished, they must help
Indian woman to give birth her baby and finally the doctor did a caesarian
using fishing rod.
Short story “The Doctor and The Doctor’s
Wife”, it begin with conversation Nick’s father (The Doctor), Eddy, Billy
Tabeshaw and Dick, that The doctor was angry and any some problem with them. Then
Nick’s mother (The Doctor’s wife) appears in this story to make the Doctor’s
feeling to be better not mad again. And Nick appears in the last paragraph just
to go with his father. From the story “The End of Something”, the story begin
with two characters are Nick and Marjorie, and Bill appears in final of this
story. In this story tells that Nick and Marjorie were talking about their
relationship. They want to break up and end their relationship.
From
this album, Hemingway also presents the place of story at lake or anything
related to lake. In “Indian Camp” the story began when they want help the
Indian woman to give birth, they went to there by rowboat to through the lake.
These are first sentences to prove that in this story the background of place
at the lake “At the lake shore there was another rowboat drawn up. The two
Indians stood waiting” (Hemingway 95). Not too different with “Indian Camp”, in
“The Doctor and The Doctor’s Wife” also presents the lake in this story,
perhaps want to make same the background of place to this album “In Our Time”.
Hemingway likes to present the background to begin his works. Dick Bulton, his
son Eddy and another Indian named Billy Tabeshaw came from the Indian Camp to
cut up logs for Nick's father. But any problem between the doctor that has real
name Henry and Dick.
Hemingway’s
“The End of something” also shows lake in first paragraph and explains the
background of place in Hortons Bay. “In the old days Hortons Bay was a
lumbering town. No one who lived in it was out of sound of the big saws in the
mill by the lake”(100). Nick break up relationship with Marjorie at there with
not clear reason then Nick felt that he is regret because his decision, but
perhaps in his mind it is the best choice. Although Nick and Marjorie each
other still love and they are lie their feeling or shy to show their real
feeling. Marjorie love to fish with Nick. She always fish with Nick, her
sweetheart. Marjorie try to remind the best finance with Nick to defend their
relationship. But, Nick doesn’t have else choice, he must break up their
relationship. Usually, the woman more easy touching than man, and she will
accept anything if she don’t have more word to say.
In Indian Camp, Nick, his father and
Uncle George go to Indian Camp after they fished and doing a caesarian with
fishing rod. Hemingway presents about fishing perhaps because the place of
story at lake or anything related to lake (beach). Almost all of people live
close lake, definitely they like to fish. Such Nick when he appears in “Indian
Camp” with his father and his uncle, he come to Indian Camp after they fished
because they bring fishing rod to there, but Hemingway shows it disguised. In
“The End of Something” Hemingway shows about fishing in this sentences “She
loved to fish. She loved to fish with Nick”(106).
The
end of story, Hemingway always makes one of character or more to go. From
“Indian Camp”, “Take Nick out of the shanty, George”(99) the doctor said. After
the doctor did a caesarian, they come back to home. From “the Doctor and The
Doctor’s Wife , after Nick met with his father and talked little
conversation, then Nick follow and went
together “I know where there's black squirrels, Daddy”(104) Nick said. “All right”(104)
said his father “Let's go there”(104). “'Oh, go away, Bill! Go away for a
while.' Bill selected a sandwich from the lunch basket and walked over to have
a look at the rods” Nick propose Bill to go away from him. Nick less like Bill,
because he always wants Nick to break up relationship with Marjorie.
